Valiant Management Loss PreventionCOP vs. ReporterOne of our Terminal Managers recently wrote this as a newsletter article. It encompasses the philosophy of Loss Prevention."I believe there are two contrasting ways to look at safety and quality from a management stand point. The first being the cop. The cop is the regulator and enforcer of the law. He maintains law and order and prevents crime before it happens. He is the hero who saves the baby. He prevents bad things from happening by ticketing law breakers and arresting evil doers. Their role is to keep day to day life safe. The good ones remain anonymous because they just go about their work. The second being the Reporter. The reporter just reports things. He sends the information out and reports on the happenings. He stands there with pen and pad and reports the after effects of a tragedy. He can not even be considered reactive because he is not reacting he is just reporting. The two are opposing views. Now believe me, I understand we all have to be reporters in some aspect. However, the goal of managing quality and safety should always be the role of cop. We need to be proactive and vigilant in damage prevention. We should be focusing on stopping incidents before they occur. This is not just the role of management it is the responsibility of each employee. I would rather tell a co-worker when he is doing something unsafe rather than report a accident or injury to a my superior. Just like a good cop whose role is to keep a town safe. We need that same mindset when it comes to safety and quality. I always subscribed to the theory no news to report is good news. Loss Prevention also follows the philosophy of : - 0 - Unsafe Acts or Behaviors." Accident Prevention / InvestigationThe latest in GPS technology and voice transmission recordings are used to assist in investigations and accountability.Training and Loss Prevention techniques are designed to address incidents before they occur. Incident reporting is standardized and communicated to all staff. All members of team have received instructions regarding incident handling / reporting and have signed as verification of receipt and understanding of process. All incidents reported to Valiant Management within minutes of occurrence. Investigation begins immediately and includes members of local team as well as Valiant Loss Prevention and Valiant Operations. |
